Historical Origin of Boxing
Currently, there is no document giving the exact time of the debut of boxing. In Mesopotamia of the Mesopotamian civilization, there was a boxing game, which many people consider to be the “ancestor” of boxing.
In the arenas of ancient Greece, many people found traces of fistfights between gladiators, where they even wore accessories such as leather straps, iron straps, etc., to defeat their opponents.
During the reign of the Roman Empire, boxing gradually degenerated into a bloody and cruel form of “entertainment”. And this sport was banned by the Roman emperor Theodosius I, who ruled in 404 BC.
Around the 16th century, boxing returned to being a recreational sport for the aristocracy, according to which the English champion Jack Broughton was the first to open a boxing school. He designed gloves to reduce injuries. At the same time, set out rules, which were later recognized as “boxing rules”.
In 1865, the rules were revised again by the Marquis of Queensberry VIII and limited the fight to three rounds of three minutes each.
In modern times, the Broughton rules are used for professional fights, while the Queensberry rules are used for amateur fights.
